On this very special holiday edition of the Cult Film Club, hosts Shawn, Paxton and Jaime finally tackle the most awesome genre Christmas film of all time, Gremlins.  Released in 1984 and directed by Joe Dante, this film is the perfect mash-up of family film and gross out horror fun.  Starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, the flick centers on a strange creature called a mogwai that is presented as a Christmas gift to Billy Peltzer by his inventor father.  Before the audience knows what to make of the mogwai Gizmo, he multiplies and the litter of new critters soon morph into an army of tiny murderous Gremlins.  Can Billy and his girlfriend Kate save the town of Kingston Falls before the Gremlins destroy it?

We talk about our history with the film, the wonderful cast, the amazing soundtrack, and why this film hasn't found the appreciative audience that it really deserves...

In episode 28 of the Cult Film Club, hosts Paxton, Shawn and Jaime finally tackle one of the most quintessential cult films of the past 30 years, 1984's Repo Man! Directed by outsider auteur Alex Cox, Repo Man centers on semi-nihilistic punk Otto (Emilio Estevez) who is reluctantly recruited into the seedy world of car repossession by repo lifer Bud (Harry Dean Stanton) and his cohorts at the Helping Hands agency. If learning the ropes, "stealing" back cars from deadbeat owners, and dodging violent Mod rock bands weren't crazy enough, Otto is also on the trail of a hot (literally, sweating balls hot) Chevy Malibu that is very possibly carrying a leaking neutron bomb, though it might also be the mobile sarcophagus for the decomposing bodies of four squid-like aliens. Figuring out how this car ties into his new girlfriend Leila, a couple of rival Latin repo men, and quite possibly time travel might be too much for Otto to handle without a frontal lobotomy.

In this episode of the Cult Film Club hosts Jaime, Paxton and Shawn dip their toes back into the horror genre to cover the batshit crazy 1991 Wes Craven ghetto adventure classic The People Under the Stairs.  We talk about the insane plot, how horror in the 90s invaded the ghetto, the actors and their ties to David Lynch's Twin Peaks, the lack of a substantial soundtrack and how adorable a tounge-less, mumbling creep living in the walls of a crazy house can be.

It's officially summer and to kick things off right, Shawn, Jaime and Pax decided to cover a flick that is all about summer vacation, the beach, and, well, Ping Pong! We're breaking tradition a little bit and covering a much more recent film, one that was released in 2014 and we think is destined to become a cult classic, Ping Pong Summer!

Written and directed by Michael Tully and starring Lea Thompson, John Hannah, and Susan Sarandon the film centers around 13 year-old Rad Miracle and his family on their annual summer trip to Ocean City Maryland for fun, sun, and Paul Revere-themed smorgasbords. Set in 1985, we follow Rad as he meets a new best friend Teddy Fryy, falls for the local funk punch swilling babe Stacy Summers, and makes an enemy out of Stacy's ex, Lyle Ace the local Ping Pong champion. Can Rad master his break dancing moves, win the girl, and beat Lyle in a one-on-one winner takes all table tennis match before the summer is over?

In this episode we talk about the film, the cast, the amazing soundtrack & score, as well as why we think that it's a shame that the film didn't do all that well in the box office.

Pax, Jaime and Shawn are back this month with the 25th episode of the Cult Film Club.  Since we've been sort of on a roll choosing some of our all time favorite flicks, we decided to cap that off with a look at the 1995 neo-noir flick, Hackers.  Directed by Ian Softley, and starring Johnny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Fisher Stevens, and Matthew Lillard, the film follows Dade Murphy (aka Crash Override, aka Zero Cool) (Miller) as he transfers to a new school and is finally able to legally use a computer again after being busted as a child for one of the largest computer cracks in history.  He quickly gets in tight with a gang of fellow hackers and falls for his digital enemy Acid Burn (Jolie), all while a renegade IT security officer (The Plague) plans to bilk his company out of millions.  After a fellow hacker unwittingly discovers the Plague's plan, it's hacker against hacker in this fast-paced, visually stylistic thriller that is equal parts awesome and 90s cheese.

On this episode of the Cult Film club hosts Jaime, Pax and Shawn finally cover their first romantic comedy (FINALLY, RIGHT?!) as they take a trip to 1987 to revist the Andrew McCarthy & Kim Cattrall masterpiece Mannequin.  Okay, so it's not a masterpiece, but it's a helluva lot of nostalgic fun and we have a great time talking about the actors (James Spader especially), the insane plot, the rad soundtrack, and a janitor who was very possibly caught fapping at the end of the film.  So grab a bag of popcorn, sit back in a comfy chair and listen to us discuss Mannequin!

On this episode of the Cult Film Club hosts Pax, Shawn and Jaime take a cue from the wintery season and break out an underappreciated childhood favorite, Young Sherlock Holmes.  Directed by Barry Levinson (Diner, Wag the Dog) and written by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Goonies, Home Alone), the film stars a cast of young unknowns including Nicholas Rowe as Holmes and Alan Cox as Watson.  The film was one of the many spectacular teen/action films produced by Steven Spielberg in the 80s (Goonies, Poltergeist, Gremlins, and Back to the Future), and it's notable as being the one major failure, though this is due less to its quality than its failure to find its audience.  Filled with cutting edge special effects work the film is also notable for featuring the first fully rendered CG character created by the fledgling CG animation studio Pixar.  Does the film still hold up?  That's what the hosts try and figure out as they discuss the plot, the actors, the special effects, and the where the movie stands in the pantheon of Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

Mixing fact, fiction, legend and the brat pack is a mighty fine way to make one hell of an interesting movie sequel. We talk about the plot, the actors, the reality behind the fiction, the fact that it actually has a true soundtrack, and Emilio Estevez’s butt, again. This is part two of a two-part, double-feature episode where we’re taking a look at the Young Guns series.

After breaking into a local museum to “borrow” some 300 year-old costumes and a trunk full of spooky artifacts for their Halloween party the kids inadvertently invoke a centuries old curse that opens the gates of hell and brings a horde of the living dead, monsters and ghosts descending upon the town. Can Phil and his lovely ghost girlfriend Sandy stop their murderous rampage before the bell tolls the Midnight Hour?!? In this episode we dig into the film, discussing the great Halloween ambiance, the classic rock soundtrack, the 80s era homages, and our favorite characters and actors.

Plus: Motorcycles! Gang violance! Bitch slapping! Rock opera! 1950s slang! Weird fashion! Pickaxe fights! If you're not thinking to yourself right now, "HOLY SHIT THAT SOUNDS AWESOME!" you may need to re-evaluate your life.

Starring a cast of campy characters that includes Michael Pare, Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan, and other Cult Film Club favorites like Bill Paxton and E.G. Daily, STREETS OF FIRE is hard to describe but easy to love--if not for the sheer ridiculousness of it all, then for the bitchin' soundtrack.

After enjoying the heck out of James Gunn's recently blockbuster hit Guardians of the Galaxy, the CFC thought it was a great opportunity to take a look at one of Gunn's first forays into the cinematic super hero genre.  Super, he also wrote and directed Super, but a decade before that he wrote and starred in a little indie flick called The Specials (2000, directed by Craig Mazin).  Starring Rob Lowe, Thomas Haden Church, Padget Brewster, Jordan Ladd and Jamie Kennedy, the movie follows a super hero team over the course of one long day right as they are about to be honored with their own line of action figures.  But can the team get over the egos and personal problems to enjoy their time in the spotlight?  Can they?

We talk about the actors, Gunn and his roots in Troma through to his new hit Marvel movie, the soundtrack, and why this film is more relevant today than it's ever been.

We’re talking about the classic 1986 sportsploitation flick Rad starring Bill Allen, Talia Shire, Lori Loughlin, Bart Connors, Jack Weston and Ray Walston. Directed by the legendary Hal Needham (Smokey & The Bandit, Cannonball Run, and Megaforce), the movie centers on BMX junkie Cru Jones who only wants to get radical on his bike with friends Becky & Luke, challenge the local cop to races in a lumber yard, and get his morning paper route finished by 7:15am. All his mom wants is for him to go to take his SATs and get into college. But when Duke Best, head of the Mongoose bicycle company, partners with the local businesses to bring a professional BMX track called Helltrack to Cochrane, Cru sees and opportunity to do what he does best, which is riding his bike. But before he can race, Cru has to prove that he can qualify, which is easier said than done when Best, along with his stuck up hot shot riders Bart Taylor and Rod & Rex, the Reynolds Twins, keep putting up barriers he has to hurdle. Along the way he learns who his true friends are, as well as winning the heart of beautiful BMX champion Christian, but does he have enough thunder in his heart to beat Helltrack?

On this episode hosts Pax, Jaime and Shawn take on the 1994 pulp super hero flick, The Shadow. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? We know! All three hosts quit their hedonistic lifestyles as opium warlords in Asia to dig a little deeper into this flick. Directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, John Lone, Tim Curry and Ian McKellen and was part of a pulp era hero resurgence on film in the late 80s/early 90s, but unlike flicks such as Dick Tracy and the Phantom, The Shadow takes a lot of weird and wonderful turns into the strange which earns it a place in cult film history. Whether it was depicting Lamont Cranston as a bloody opium warlord, the lavish and sometime ridiculous set design or the over the top performances this movie is unlike any super hero flick. So put on your secret Shadow ring, gas up your supped-up taxi cab, and unholster your twin pearl handled .45 automatic pistols as we explore this awesomely insane film!

Hello all, Shawn, Pax and Jaime are back for the new season of the Cult Film Club! We had a blast recording the first twelve installments, and we’re ready to start up the super-secret meetings of the CFC once again.

While we have an awesome slate of movies lined up to talk about on the show, we wanted to kick off this second season by paying tribute to a true icon of cinema, Mr. Harold Ramis, who passed away from complications due to vasculitis at the age of 69. From his beginnings at National Lampoon and Second City, Ramis would become sort of an unsung hero of comedy who was always in the shadow of his much more high profile collaborators (including John Candy, Bill Murray, John Hughes, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Dan Aykroyd.) Sure, most people know him as Egon Spengler from the Ghostbusters, but how many people realize he directed National Lampoon’s Vacation or Caddyshack? As an actor Ramis took the role of the straight man and twisted it to a degree where he managed to wring more laughs out of rolling his eyes and shaking his head than most comics get out of writing reams of material. As a writer he brought us both heartwarming and bombastic comedies like Meatballs and Animal House respectively. As a director he helmed a handful of classic films, two of which are listed in the AFI’s Top 100 Comedies of the last century.

Harold Ramis had a huge impact on all of us, and we decided to sit down and have a conversation about three of the films that really stand out for us as hosts, as well as sort of sampling a variety of his work from different eras of his career. With his first major acting role in Stripes, Ramis held his own against frequent collaborator Bill Murray while also penning one of the most memorable satires of the military on film. A tribute to Ramis wouldn’t be complete without paying homage to his turn as Egon, the Ghostbusters who not only collects spores, molds, and fungi, but makes one mean Twinkie simile. Finally we spend some time in a karmic loop discussing quite possibly Ramis’ masterwork, Groundhog Day.

For the final episode of season 1 of the Cult Film Club Podcast hosts Shawn. Paxton and Jaime tackle the pseudo-Christmas wackiness that is Better Off Dead from 1985.  Starring John Cusack as Lane Meyer, a clutzy teen with aspirations of skiingthe K-12 and winning back the girl who dumped him, the film is a live action cartoon of car races, jell-o snorthing, French exchange students, and anthromoporphic hamburgers rocking out to Van Halen.  Grab your book on how to pick up trashy ladies, your aardvark hoodie, and your fetal pig in a jar as we ponder the age of question of what the street value is of this mountain!

The Cult Film Club is back with our first Halloween episode where Paxton, Jaime and Shawn tackle the cult horror phenomenon that is Troll 2! None of the hosts saw this movie before we watched it for the show, so does it live up to the hype? In addition to discussion of the flick we also tackle the Documentary, Best Worst Movie, which chronicles the making and fall out of Troll 2. So grab your corn cob, avoid all green custardy foodstuffs, and take a trip with us to Nilbog where we discover that even though you can’t piss on hospitality, you can apparently piss all over the dinner table and your family and not get beaten to death…

In this epsiode of the Cult Film Club Pax, Jaime and Shawn take a metaphorical road trip both back in time and down to central Florida to see the almost lost cult classic, Miami Connection.  We rock out with the heroic taekwando band Dragon Sound, go into berserker rages while fighting drug dealing ninjas, and we all look for our lost fathers, because we're all like, orphans and junk.  Is this not making sense?  Well, it'll make a whole lot more after we talk about the pure insanity that is Miami Connection.  So grow out your best looking John Oates mustache, grab someone's nose with your toes, and join the fight against the ninja!

The Cult Film Club is proud to cap off the Summer 2013 TAG Network crossover event by inviting our first guests, two awesome Classic Film Jerks, into the clubhouse to discuss the 1998 neo-noir flick Zero Effect!  We were graciously invited onto the CFJ show last week to discuss The Maltese Falcon, and so when we had Andrew and Michael in our place we figured what better way to bookend a look at classic noir than with one of our favorite cult mysteries.  Starring Bill Pullman, Ben Stiller, Kim Dickens and Ryan O’Neal, the film centers on Daryl Zero, who is by his own admission the greatest observer the world has ever known. One part objective observer, one part detective, one part master of disguise, one part deluded rock star, and a full on emotionally damaged, reclusive hermit, Zero (Pullman) is like a modern day Sherlock Holm-body, solving mysteries from inside his hermetically sealed apartment.  But his assistant, Steve Arlo (Stiller), has had enough, and for him the next case will be his last.  That case, the case of the missing tycoon's keys, proves to be much more complicated than either of them bargained for as they weave their way through a maze of blackmail, revenge, murder, and even a bit of romance.

In the episode we talk about the idea of ditching "who don-its" for "why theydid-its", Pullman's magnetic and wacky charisma, being famous for marrying a poster model, and the all too certain comeback of the pager.  We take a closer look at the actors and then we all take turns recasting the flick for a more modern audience (and in one case retroactively for an 80s audience!)

This time on the Cult Film Club, Jaime, Paxton and Shawn tackle their first sequel, the incomparable and sometimes incoherent Karate Kid 3.  Daniel Larusso, having already won the All Valley Karate Tournament against a high school bully, a death match agasint the chosen Chozen, and lost two ultimate loves of his life can do only one thing, turn to the darkside, Return of the Jedi-style.  Falling prey to a trap set up by the down-on-his-luck Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese and his overload/employer ex-Nam buddy Tony Silver, Daniel strays away from the teachings of Mr. Miyagi and follows the path of pain, suffering and the front leg sweep.  Can a priceless bonsai tree growing in the pit of the Devil's Cauldron save his soul?  Seriously, this is the recap of the film.

Next time on Episode 7 of the Cult Film Club, hosts Jaime, Paxton and Shawn will be will be traveling to the realm of Outworld to do battle with Shang Sung, Goro, and Kano while watching the 1995 martial arts flick Mortal Kombat! Starring Christopher Lambert, Robin Shou, Bridgette Wilson, and Linden Ashby, this flick was adapted from the hyper violent video game series and focuses on three heroes on a quest to save our world from being enslaved by the forces of evil in a fighting tournament called Mortal Kombat. The flick was directed by Paul WS Anderson, the guy who also brought us Event Horizon, Resident Evil, and Aliens Vs. Predator, so a classy filmmaker is what we're dealing with.

Next time on Episode 6 of the Cult Film Club, hosts Paxton, Jaime and Shawn will be will be tackling the 1982 Bob Rosenthal teen sex comedy Zapped! Starring the future Charles in Charge power couple Scott Baio and Willie Ames, the film focuses on a nerdy senior named Barney who accidentally unlocks the power of telekinesis after an explosion in the school lab. What's a boy to do with his new-found power? Well, undress the student body of course. For science. The flick also features the busty Heather Thomas, the Fact's of Life's Felice Schachter, and one of the best dream sequences in modern history involving Scatman Crothers, Einstein and some flying salami!

In this month's episode, hosts Paxton, Jaime and Shawn delve into Hal Ashby's 1971 Cult Classic Harold and Maude.  Starring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort, the film centers on the relationship between a 20-something obsessed with death and funerals juxtaposed against a 79 year-old who is rambuncious and full of life.  In addition to the film we spend some time talking about who we would like to see if given the chance to recast the movie with modern actors.

On Episode 4 of the Cult Film Club, hosts Jaime, Paxton and Shawn are taking a trip into the mind of indie director Don Coscarelli by watching his fantasy opus, The Beastmaster. Starring Marc Singer (V), Tanya Roberrts (Sheena, That 70s Show), John Amos (Goodtimes), and Rip Torn (Men in Black, Freddy Got Fingered), the flick follows Dar, a warrior with the power to communicate with the animal kingdom, on his quest to avenge the destruction and mass murder of his village by the tyrannical wizard Maax. Along the way there are plenty of painted tigers, hot-bodied Stygian witches, and freaky bird people that make this film a true fantasy cult classic!

Welcome back for Episode 3 of the Cult Film Club. This time Jaime, Paxton and Shawn convene at the clubhouse to discuss the 1966 Sergio Corbucci spaghetti western, Django! Though always in the shadow of Leone’s Dollars Trilogy, and banned in many countries for decades, Django enthralled viewers by introducing new levels of ultra-violence and debauchery to the western genre. Starring Franco Nero, the film centers around a lone stranger caught between two warring factions, seeking revenge, and dragging a coffin full of chaos wherever he goes.

In this episode we talk about how each of us came to the western genre, our preferences on English Dubs versus subtitles, modern westerns versus the classic era, how we feel about the violence in the film, the many influences and homage’s in Django, as well as our favorite scenes. We also dig into Franco Nero’s career and play Hollywood moguls as we recast the film with modern actors.
